Spring Dance Workshop Series

Big Red Wall’s Mission: Is to create moving art, which embodies the resilience of the Black community.  Transcribing the African American experiences into performance storytelling. In order to portray African American stories with our true views and perspectives being represented.  Building a forum where communication can flourish, relationships can grow and broken ties can be mended.

Class and Description

Class Schedule: (Unless specified All Class are taught by Artistic Director: Erika ‘Red’ Stowall)

Class is 1 hr. and 15 minutes 

April 27 – Afro-Brazilian: Movements draw from many Afro Brazilian dance styles including Samba Reggae, Frevo, Carnaval, and Samba de Roda
May 4 – Modern: Movement draw from Horton and Dunham technique. Grounded with Floor work combination.
May 11 – Pilates Floor Mat w/Laressa Mems(Please bring your own mat):
May 18 – Congolese: Movement derived from West African mainly the Congo.
May 25 – Jazz w/Jeremy: A technique consisting of isolations of the body, improving performance quality as well as developing complex rhythms and patterns.
June 1 – Improvisation/Contemporary: Exploring the edge of movement while working with an underlying line and technique. We explore impetus influenced by sensation, music, and influences imagined, emotional, and physical.

 

Teacher’s Bios

Laressa L. Mems: Laressa is a professional dancer that started her training under Dan Durkacy at the Flint Dance Center, and continued her training under Karen Mills-Jennings at the Flint School of Performing Arts. She received her Bachelor of Science in Dance Degree (Cum Luade) from Wayne State University in 2011. She currently dances with two dance companies: Foluke’-Jeffrey and the Artists (Artistic Director, Lauren M-R Taylor), and Big Red Wall (Artistic Director, Erika “Red” Stowall). Laressa recently joined BRW Advisory Board as the head of Finances and Planning. Along with dancing, Laressa is a certified STOTT Pilates and Barre Instructor and has been teaching since 2012. She currently works for two studios, Club Pilates (Beverly Hills and Novi, MI locations), and Core Sport Pilates Studio in Plymouth, MI.

Jeremy Smith: Jeremy Smith, a native of Detroit, began dancing at the age of 10. Jeremy received opportunities to perform with such gospel recording artist as Vicki Winans, J-Moss and Tye Tribett. He began his formal training at the age of 13 in ballet, modern and jazz at the Arts Academy in the Woods in Fraser, MI. Jeremy co-trained at Fem Fatale Dance Studio in Oak Park, MI under the direction of Rita Mosley. As he excelled rapidly in various styles he furthered his dance education under scholarship at Marygrove College in Detroit, MI. Later, becoming artistic director of Fem Fatale Dance Studio he progressed his teaching career in 2014 as founder and co-owner of Staccato Dance Works in Hazel Park, MI. He is known for his intergrading of underground styles such as vogue, j-sette and hip-hop with classical techniques with a passion for dance as strong as his orthographically dynamics. Jeremy is a member of Big Red Wall Dance Company since 2016.

Erika ‘Red’ Stowall: Erika ‘Red’ Stowall is a choreographer and educator residing in Detroit, MI. Red attended the University of Michigan, receiving a BFA in Dance and Choreography. Afterward, Red pursued a post-bachelor degree in Dance Education (K-12) at Wayne State University. Red was awarded the Applebaum Emerging Artist for choreography in 2015 and in the same category, awarded the Kresge Art Fellowship in 2016. Red is the founder and current Artistic Director of Big Red Wall Dance Company.

Erika "Big Red" Stowall is a choreographer and performer from Detroit, MI. Currently she serves as Artistic Director of Big Red Danke productions, and teaches at various locations in the Metro-Detroit area. Her current dance companies are Big Red Wall and Red Pumps.
